Jim, Why don't you use something that already exists and save yourself all the trouble of reinventing a wheel? There are some great aftermarket gauges out there. Some with "welcome ceremony", some with additional features, multiple gauges in one. I would look into that. Use the inner workings of a speedometer with odometer and all the circuitry and just make it fit into the DeLorean size gauge. They are backlit so you could easily use a backlit face that looks stock. Some time ago I came across one with RGB backlight. Use something like that and you'll be able to set any backlight color you like. Oh, and some gauges use a link to communicate with other gauges you might have so they all have the same color and brightness. This should make it a lot easier but will surely take out the fun of designing everything yourself. Greetings from Poland!
