Would it be easier to make a set of darker lenses?  The DeLorean taillamps are 
not very complex - no compound curves.  Seems some tinted plexiglass glued up to 
match the different lamps and a simple metal trim strip could be a way to go.

In addition to the other comments .... Before you do it to the DeLorean 
lens, experiment on some junkers from whatever you can find at the scrap 
yard.
