It would be very interesting to see comparable costs for owners that don't do any of their own maintenance, although I fear we're a significant minority! Many of my expenses were unnecessary according to many experts in the Delorean community. Several of my expenses were due to a car accident the year before that I ultimately ended up having someone else's insurance pay for. Deduction #1 -$160.76 All of my coolant and radiator expenses before Expense #24 were due to the accident. You can subtract $160.76 for the radiator stuff that wasn't my fault or the cars. It ended up being unnecessary anyway since insurance paid for a replacement radiator, AC condenser, and a paint job. None of this was needed before the accident in 2011. Deduction #2 -$55.90 This was recorded in expense # 18. I decided to install an adjustable alternator bracket to make belt replacements super easy. This wasn't necessary but I liked the idea of being able to replace an alternator belt in 5 minutes without using a jack to tension the belt. It came in handy when my alternator belt popped somewhere in Kentucky last year. While this isn't a maintenance item, I like it and it was worth going over my budget. Deduction #3 -$361.78 This was recorded in expense #21. After hearing about the wonderful LCA brackets being sold by Ed in Europe and the friendly folks at DMCMW I decided to splurge and purchase a pair. According to some of the drama on this forum, I wasted my money and should have never purchased them. According to my car, it was money well spent. I'm happy with the LCA brackets, but because people on here say they are not necessary, the expense probably should not be counted against my in my total. Deduction #4 -$48.43 This was recorded in expense #25. I added some fancy washers to my LCA bracket bushings and replaced the bolts with longer ones. This was to prevent premature wear on the bushings. Once again, according to the experts, these cars don't need LCA brackets and Deloreans are perfect just the way they left the factory. Based on this expert logic, I didn't need the LCA brackets and had I not purchased them, I wouldn't have spent an additional $48.43 on hardware. Deduction #5 -$290.47 This was recorded in expense #35. For this expense I replaced my steering column bushing with a stainless vibration reducing steering column. White trash like me refers to this as Spec .01 steering. I also replaced my steering column bushing with one of those fancy units from Toby Peterson. My steering column bushing was worn out and needed to be replaced. My old steering column (lower) was fine and according to some people, the vibrations were a feature that I was supposed to be happy about. Well, I wasn't happy about it and wanted to spend some money so I did. But since some people want to feel every little bump on the road, I'll go ahead and deduct the cost for my Spec .01 steering. My actual cost for all expenses excluding gasoline, speeding tickets, and insurance: $1,266.3732. Deductions for unnecessary parts: $917.34 My actual cost for maintenance excluding gasoline, speeding tickets, insurance and unnecessary parts: $349.0332 Thats pretty dang good for someone who drove over 12,000 miles in one year.
