My car is equipped with a battery cutoff switch that is used almost every time the car is put in the garage. This keeps the battery from draining. In the spring I pull the battery and service it, checking all of the cells to make sure the electrolyte is up, that the cells are OK and within spec and I test the battery to make sure that it is good. Then I charge it outside of the car and recheck the battery to see if there was any improvement and clean the outside of the battery before I put it back in the car. I charge that battery outside of the car so that the gas and any liquid that might come out of the battery doesn't get on anything. You can clean out the battery compartment at this time as well, but make sure that you don't let anything get on the carpet or seats because it will cause damage. By doing it this way, my batteries have lasted well over 5 years and rarely ever go dead.
