Every state has its own property tax rules.

In North Carolina, vehicle tax values are set by the state DMV, but counties are allowed to override them at their discretion. Every year Raleigh values my DeLorean at $26,000, and every year I have to go down to the county tax office to get them to lower it to $12,000.

Another North Carolina nuance: if you live in an incorporated municipality you pay both city and county property taxes.

And of North Carolina's 100 counties, only one has a mandatory school funding tax set not by the county, but by the state -- guess which county I live in....
