The service valves should be replaced every time the system is serviced. You should also throw away the plastic dust covers and use brass caps to seal the service ports, you should not depend on the shrader valves to hold pressure except to hook up your service lines. They were never designed for the pressures and temperatures used on A/C systems. You should be replacing them with A/C type cores, they are made a little better but still should be covered with a brass cap. Just because the hoses on your '89 school bus are still OK is no measure of how good or bad the hoses on your Delorean are. I doubt they were made by the same company. It is not a matter of "if" the hoses will leak, it is a matter of when. And since they are 30 years old the "when" will be sooner rather than later.
