The rubber rack mounts do absolutely nothing to isolate the wheels from the steering wheel -- there are uninterrupted hard couplings from the rims all the way to the steering wheel itself. Tires provide minimal cushioning, but that's it. If flexible steering couplings were not advantageous, they would not be so widely used. I'm pretty sure even Steve's little Geo Metro has a flexible coupling in its column.
