Welmoed, Yes the computers in cars now more control how the gauge reads.
They are also made in China which by our government has allowed them to take
over a lot of our U.S. manufacturing.
China sending units, china air filters on a Euro car. 
The sending unit's I'm working on are made in Europe and modified in the
U.S.

If you write "with a fuel pump" I wonder if it is a combination fuel
pump/sender unit Ford and GM vehicles a.o. use (the ones with the float on a
tiny arm).
