Yes. A state Trooper pulled me over while driving my D near Gutenberg Iowa (many years ago). He was doing accident reconstruction regarding a DeLorean driver that was killed and had some questions. The oncoming car was in the DeLorean's lane so he went left (Don't do that... go for the ditch because of what follows). The oncoming car compensated and tried to return to their lane. Consequently the D tried to go right. The oncoming car hit the D in the side killing the driver ( a barge captain as I recall). I mention to the trooper that the Gullwing doors were supposed to provide additional side impact protection. He replied that side impact fatalities are not usually caused by physical damage from the crumpling door or other car but rather that the neck snaps from the side impact. Think of your head as a bowling ball on a spring... as the car is impacted the head takes a different trajectory than the body and you cannot control it. That is why side airbags are useful. Partially to keep you from hitting the side of the car and partially to cushion the head movement to the side on a side impact.
