There is a critical difference between brushed enamel and aerosol sprayed enamel. Brushed enamel has totally different characteristics due to the suspension agents. Spray enamel is suspended in 25% Acetone, 15% Butyl Acetate, and 10% Xylene, plus 30% propellant. Only 20% of the can is actual paint That is why spray enamel yields such thin coats. Brushed enamel is suspended in 50% mineral spirits -- half the can is paint. That is why brushed enamel yields thicker coats. Mineral spirits is also much slower to evaporate, which is why brushed enamel sets up better. The final coating is also different. Sprayed enamel is highly liable to chip and crack. Brushed enamel retains plasticity. A thick coat will actually absorb impacts.
