The crumple extension is supposed to crumple in a front end collision (assuming the vehicle you run into has a bumper as low as a DeLorean -- chances are you are going to slide underneath until you hit its rear axle). The crumple extension is not supposed to crumple simply driving down the road, which is unfortunately what they were doing, hence the factory recall.
