If alternative fuels ever do catch on, road taxes will indeed be collected via onboard computer odometer readings, perhaps transmitted automatically in real time. State governments would likely make those of us still driving real cars carry some sort of GPS transponder plugged into the cigarette lighter to accomplish the same thing. Obvious bypass would be to simply unplug the damn thing. The only way to catch you would be a roadside spot check (note that you couldn't just plug it in as the trooper was walking up to your car because there would be a geographical disconnect between your current location and the last time it transmitted).
