The engine was purring like a kitten (actually more like a lion since the entire muffler system is missing except for the rusty hulk that was once the Cat). Since there is no coolant I could only let it run for a minute so I slipped it into reverse and backed it back into my shop. It was an exhilarating moment. > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "content22207" <brobertson@> wrote: > > > > I have full faith & confidence that little car will be tooling the back streets of Raleigh very soon, with or without brakes. > > > > When I help an owner, he or she keeps all of his or her K-Jet parts. I don't bring anything home with me. Most owners put their disused K-Jet crap in a box on the shelf "just in case" (no one has converted back yet). Steve Rice traded his for a replacement engine. > > > > Bill Robertson > > #5939 > > > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "jtrealtywebspannet" <jtrealty@> wrote: > > > > > > Just being able to move the car can tell you a lot about all of the systems like steering, suspension, transmission, etc. You cannot get that from just starting up the motor. So any way you can get the car to move under it's own power can tell you a LOT about the condition of the car. Even if you are going to part it out you still can tell a lot. It sounds like this car is not really a parts car. Even if it needs a shift computer and a cable that is not much. Check the condition of the transmission fluid. If it is not burnt and/or gritty the transmission may be OK. By now with all of the conversions you have done you should be able to put together enough parts to recreate a K-Jet system. > > > David Teitelbaum > > > > > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "content22207" <brobertson@> wrote: > > > > > > > > He definitely is not going to have any internal regulation until a new cable is run. But the frame is in excellent condition (despite sitting in a field for a decade -- I've seen it with my own eyes), he has a complete set of slightly dented body panels from the other car, and the interior is.... > > > > > > > > At least the damn thing runs. Factory fuel system was toast, so until he was able to install a suitable replacement all he knew for sure was that the engine wasn't locked up (starter motor turned it OK). > > > > > > > > Bill Robertson > > > > #5939 > > > > > > > > > > > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "jtrealtywebspannet" <jtrealty@> wrote: > > > > > > > > > > The quadrant lever adjusts the amount of voltage the internal alternator makes and from that the shift computer varies the shift points. If he really has to drive on a bum shift computer or bad cable the best advice would be to pull fuse #13 10A. That would disable the shift computer and the transmission will default into "Limp Home" mode and stay in 3rd gear. He would be able to drive it slowly and gently at low speeds and still be able to go highway speeds if necessary. I am guessing here but I bet if Bill had a Delorean with an automatic he would make up something MUCH simpler and easier to maintain then the shift computer we currently have. > > > > > David Teitelbaum > > > > > > > > > > --- In dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx, "content22207" <brobertson@> wrote: > > > > > > > > > > > > Does the gear selector lever send signals to the transmission computer, or does it bypass the computer and send them directly to the solenoids? IE: if Jim's transmission computer turns out to be bad, could he drive the car anyway by manually shifting between 1st and 3rd? > > > > > > > > > > > > Bill Robertson > > > > > > #5939 > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > ------------------------------------ To address comments privately to the moderating team, please address: moderators@xxxxxxxxxxx For more info on the list, tech articles, cars for sale see www.dmcnews.com To search the archives or view files, log in at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dmcnewsYahoo!
