The clutch is shot and the leak *could* be the nut on the 5th gear came loose and went through the cover. All of this speculation is great but the transmission and clutch is coming out under all circumstances if for no other reason than to just replace the clutch. The burning oil smell could be caused by a leak in the rear main seal with oil getting on the clutch and pressure plate and which is burning off and causing clutch slippage when the clutch is engaged. Check your engine oil level and make sure that the puddle of fluid below the car is not engine oil. > > -Chris > DMC6453 > > > > > ________________________________ > From: daviddelorean <daviddelorean@...> > To: dmcnews@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > Sent: Tue, March 2, 2010 5:33:58 PM > Subject: [DML] Transmission Problem - any ideas > > My car has a manual transmission. I noticed slight slippage over the course of a few weeks (the car was in gear but wouldn't move as if in neutral). Then one night coming home doing 45mph complete slippage. Also noticed a very bad smell I could only describe as 'burning oil'. > > Drove slow and made it home and parked the car. Went out to the garage 2 hrs later and the 'burning oil' smell was so bad I thought the car was on fire. Also, a large pool of transmission fluid had dumped out of the gearbox onto the floor (by large I mean the whole area under the rear of the car was a swimming pool). > > I start the car regularly and drive it up and down the drive way 50' or so. Gears still work. Car moves. But that 'burning oil' smell is always present. > > Any ideas what this can be? > > > > ------------------------------------ > > To address comments privately to the moderating team, please address: > moderators@... > > For more info on the list, tech articles, cars for sale see www.dmcnews.com > > To search the archives or view files, log in at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dmcnewsYahoo!
