Re: [DML] Re: Cleaning gas tank

Good advice Andy. It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, disconnect the battery. Sparks and gasoline fumes can be fatal. I always aim a fan, placed several feet away, towards the open tank to move the fumes. Rod  10921

Hi Kevin,

I've used acetone with great success cleaning up a gas tank. Be sure to get elbow-length chemical gloves (I got some at Fleet Farm) and I recommend wearing an organic chemical-shielding respirator. The vapors can be very overpowering. I work in the dry cleaning industry and these are easy to come by for me, but I think Grainger sells them too. With the respirator on, you will be able to get your face down in there and clean it out without taking breaks or losing brain cells. It uses filtration cartridges by 3M.

Dont even bother trying to save any of the old crap in the tank if its original. Just replace it since it isn't too expensive anyway.

Andy
