When the light comes on it is supposed to be a reminder to have the motor tuned up. Minimum is a new O2 sensor and a valve adjustment. Should also include filters (air, oil, fuel), oil change, spark plugs, ignition wires, set the mixture screw and check all of the systems. To reset the counter you bend a paper clip and use it to turn the tamper-proof screw on the side of the counter CW till it is all zeros. I find it easier to just take it out of the car to do it. Takes 30,000 miles to hit 100%. Since most of us are not using the car as a daily driver and not putting much mileage on these cars this counter is less relevant. IMHO you should do this service every 10 years or when you replace the water pump or if it is running really bad and has not has this service done for a long time (or if you don't know when it was done last, (if ever!))
