Re: [DML] Running hot when it's hot out

Joe,

How long has you car been doing this? Is it recent or right after the engine rebuild?

Are you sure that both of your fans are coming on?
Is the engine belt for the pump properly tightened (i.e. not slipping on the pump pulley)?
Are you sure the water pump is pumping as it should?

Just some questions to help point you in the right direction.

  Regards,
  Daryl

Here's a mystery I've had for some time now: When it's hot out, my
car runs hot. It's fine most of the time, but once it gets above ~70
degrees out, the car starts to run hotter than it should.

For example, if it's ~80 degrees out, the car might run at 220 or so
when moving at highway speeds (~3000 RPMs or so, I'd guess; whatever
70 MPH comes out to in 3rd on an automatic). When ~100 degrees out,
it gets up t 240, the first redline on the temp gauge. It will drop
back down a bit once I get off the highway, but not down to the
acceptable range.

I checked for coolant leaks and found none. The coolant bottle was
about 1/2 full, as it should be. I bled the system at the radiator
and water pump and found no air at all. I replaced the thermostat
about a year ago, but this made no difference. The water pump is
about 5 years old, which is when I had an engine overhaul done. The
radiator is one of the new triple-core brass ones, also 5 years old.
The cooling fans are running fine, and go on at the proper temperature.

Any suggestions on what I should check next? It's rather
infuriating. I was thinking of bringing it to a radiator shop and
having them purge the system, but I'm not sure if that would help.

Thanks!
