The original fuel filter screens that I have seen in my beginning years working with DeLoreans were epoxied in. What is unfortunate is that the epoxied the Permatex sells and states on the container is good for gasoline over time isn't. That is why when I discovered that they were failing I put out a memo on the DML that I would exchange or replace them. Very few took me up on the replacement. Even since then I haven't had any noticeable amount failures on pumps or screen that have been contributed to the epoxy. Long since ago I went to a very simple fuel baffle system that I now use the snap on tube on the bottom of the pump and filter screen that snaps onto the bottom of that. This way you can change the filter screen at will the filter screen from anyone's part you have or buy. Always trying to improve what we have. I never trusted that setup so years ago I started having machined aluminum adapters made to eliminate any chance of failure. As far as I know both John and DMCH used epoxy bonded filters until they (DMCH) started buying my adapters about three years ago. They've since had their own version made but my point is any one who thinks they have one of these filters in their tank should have it replaced because IMHO it can easily cause pump failure. BTW I never sold any of the epoxied filters so if you bought one from us please don't call me to ask if it's safe. You have to be particularly careful these days with fuel systems. The older cars were never meant to have to deal with this stuff. You may be able to salvage the pick-up. Remove all of the loose, crumbly stuff and use an epoxy that is more tolerant of the newer gas blends. If you find a lot of dirt in the tank you should consider changing the fuel filter. Since the Delorean has a recirculating fuel system all of the crud eventually winds up in the filter. I also found it hard to tell exactly what you were trying to show us with the picture.
