The $20K rule is a reality check and a guideline. In fact if you talk to the vendors nowadays it is probably closer to $25 or $30K. Wether you believe it or not, it will come out to that # one way or another. You can do it all at once or you can spread it out over time. Either way you WILL spend it. This is not being elitist, it is just the way it is. BTW this includes the purchase price so you can buy a "beater" and spend a lot on it or you can buy a "pretty", well maintained one, it doesn't matter. In the real world buying a reliable car (any car) that you can trust and drive anywhere for $20,000 is not all that much. The main purpose of the $20K rule is to prepare a newbie who gets that "bargain" for maybe $9,000 (or less!) and thinks that's all he will have to spend. This is one of the biggest mistakes a newbie can make. By not having the resources the car starts draining him and getting him stuck everywhere he goes. Finally he gets so fed up that he winds up selling the POS. Better to tell him in advance what he is in for. Anyway not all Delorean owners are as clever and creative as you are and must pay someone for all the work!!!!!!!!
