That "O" ring can leak. In fact on many cars (not Deloreans but it can't hurt) it is recomended to stick some silicone into the roll pin after putting it into the output flange. I smear some silicone on the "O" ring too. Overfilling the transmission or using the wrong stuff can also make it leak. If the adjustment nut was turned and the bearing is loosened the seals will also leak.
