Must be the notorious cable system: angle drive, upper and lower cable. The angle drive need a lot of oiling/greasing to keep working and both cables need maintenance too. Look behind the left front wheel of the cable support is there and the cable in place. Unscrew the angle drive, test it's rotation, use a lot of oil (motor oil will be fine) to lube it. Best is to take the cables out and clean and grease them too. Perhaps you can save the speedo drive system this way. There's no fun like having a D.
