Lawrence - This is a very sensible idea, but I want to point out an issue that can arise from this change if routine maintenance is not performed in a timely fashion on cars so equipped. First off, we have been dealing with pitted and corroded aluminum pipes every day since our shop opened, so I totally understand the basic issue. Stainless steel and aluminum are several classes away from each other on the Galvanic scale. Regular carbon steel and aluminum are nearly next door neighbors on that scale. If the aluminum pipes are replaced with stainless steel, and the coolant is not flushed and changed every two years (max), the remaining aluminum in the system will become sacrificial (anodic) to the stainless steel. In other words, material will start to erode from the engine block, heads, and other aluminum components that contact the coolant. Some will pipe up (pun intended) and say that the stainless header bottles must therefore be a bad idea. The fact is that the amount of stainless steel has alot to do with the rate at which the aluminum will erode. The stainless header bottles will not contibute greatly to the problem with proper maintenance, but will have a small effect. However, with stainless pipes you are talking about a substantial increase in the surface area in contact with coolant. I will try to find and post a copy of the galvanic scale in the Files area of this site. ***This is not to say that your idea is a bad one. I just want to make sure that everybody knows that there is no substitute for proper maintenance, as David T has been preaching forever***.
