You take the rateing of the battery..Say it is 48 amp/hours. This means you can draw 48 amps for one hour, or 24 amps for two hours, or 1 amp for 48 hours....etc. So....the forumula is, the battery capacity in amp/hours divided by the load in amps. exp: Your load is .5 amps (500 ma).
