If the suction hose, aka pick-up, hose gets soft and kinks or collapses under the vacuum the pump will get noisy. More prone to do it when the fuel tank is 1/2 or less. The pump will also start making noise before it dies. IMHO if the hose does cut off the fuel and the pump starts getting noisy it wears the pump out much faster because the fuel lubricates and cools the pump. When the pump can't get enough fuel it overheats, wears faster, and then dies. Pull the pump. If the hose is mushy either put a spring inside it or replace it.
