My '83 has all LEDs for indicators, including the alternator. Although John disagrees, with the original Motorola alternator, the LED is quite sufficient to get the alternator gong. All that is need is just enough current to get the action started. Once some voltage is generated, the regulator rectifies the output voltage with its own rectifier and can maintain the output of the alternator. The light comes on when the ignition is first turn on, and should indicate failure of the alternator (really the main rectifiers.
