I had to remove the whole shifter assembly. It's been some time, but I recall it not being easy at all. I had to very carefully ease the hard metal lines that run along the mounting plate out of the way just to remove the hardware. From there I removed it and disassembled it from the bottom. I wish I could be more help but it has been a few years since I've even looked in that part of my car.
