[DML] Re: Further Thoughts on Angle Drives

My El Cheapo digital camera can't focus worth 2 cents. For photographs
I may need to break out the trusty 35mm.

Descriptively, this is what I did:

>From the factory, the spindle cable is pressed into a round piece of
brass, which is then pressed into the shaft of the spindle gear.
That's what holds the spindle cable. I drilled out the last bits of
cable, then used hobby files to make that hole square shaped. A piece
of 5/32" square brass tubing (1/8" inside measurement) was inserted
into that hole to become a receiver for 1/8" square drive cable ends.
>From this point forward my spindle cables will be insertable and
removable, rather than permanently pressed into the gear.

My receiver is longer than the original brass piece that was squared
out, so JB Weld has been poured around the edges inside the spindle
gear shaft. My shaft now is solid with a long square hole running
through the middle of it (when you look into my spindle nut, you see a
square hole just like the wheel disc).

I'm using Help! brand universal speedometer cables for my spindle
cables. Their square ends are actually 3/32", so I sleeve them with a
piece of 1/8" square brass tubing (3/32" inside measurement).

I thought I was all set to roll this afternoon, but mismeasured the
cable and cut it too short. Oh well, lesson learned. If it doesn't
rain tomorrow I'll cut a new one and try again.

Please note this modification totally violates every principle that
DeLorean purists stand for. Those who believe the cars are perfect
just as they left Dunmurry may well burn my removable spindle cable in
effigy. I expect to be ostracized, friendless, and seated right next
to the kitchen or back door as DCS'08.

Ask me if I care.
