My spindle cable came loose from its angle drive gear, so I took the opportunity during repair to photograph (within the focal limitations of my uber cheap digital camera) what the gears look like. A pic has been uploaded to #5939's Yahoo photo album. OEM Smith gears are metal, not plastic. And their composition doesn't seem particularly weak (based on lack of teeth wear). I suspect a lot of angle drive failures are nothing more than intermeshing failures. The teeth do not interlock very deeply at all. If the brass bushing that centers the spindle gear wears even slightly, it can wobble away from the speedometer gear and stop turning it. I'm swapping housings for that very reason (#5939's original bushing is too wallowy for my tastes). I've read somewhere about spindle cables that are too long. The gears intermesh towards the outside of the vehicle, not the inside. I suppose a too long cable might tend to push the gears away from each other. There's nothing to adjust tension within the housing (a fixed piece of convex shaped of metal pushes against the spindle gear). There also is a magnetic disc, probably to pick up metal shavings.
