Counting cars for sale on eBay is hardly an accurate method to determine how many are in service. Using it, how would you account for owners who are happy with their cars and do not wish to sell them? How would you account for cars that are sold via other means? In the US, eBay only lists about 5 DeLoreans for sale at any given time -- what possible conclusions can you draw about American ownership from that? You state that Chris' CIS works properly and has never needed any attention, then state that it is hardly a common car. The conclusion I draw from your statements is that properly functioning CIS that never needs attention is uncommon....
