According to Stainless Steel Illusion, page 82, you are correct. It mentions the "black" cars with "at least inner body/chassis cars without stainless steel". Many of us just assumed they had some kind of body panel, probably plastic, but there was never any actual evidence of that. I guess they were training the crew but did not have any body panels to work with. BTW SSI goes on to say that among the initial 500 cars shipped to the US these "black" cars were included so the according to SSI the "several hundred black cars" became part of the inital production. The inference here is that the majority of the inital production run of 500 are the "black cars". Maybe these are the ones with the very textured underbody? What I would really like to see would be the foam shipping pads that you see in the pictures of the cars being shipped. I really doubt any still exist anymore.
