You need to have a contract. If something should go wrong you would not have the car and maybe no rights towards the equity you invested into the car. The car must also be insured. If there was to be a loss (theft or fire) you could also lose your equity. A better way would be to allow the owner to have a lien on the car just like a car loan. That way you can have the car and use it. You just can't sell it until you pay it off.
