My problem was the cable that passes through the spindle. Was wound counter clockwise. On a right hand drive vehicle (right wheel) that would tighten the spirals with primary rotation. In our case primary rotation worked against them. On a trip to DC my cable unwound like spaghetti inside the spindle. I've since repaired a donated angle drive, but still carry my old RPM xRef chart in the glove compartment just in case. I recommend making a chart that is easy to read at a glance, jetisoning xRefs such as 55 MPH in 2nd gear, and experimenting with fonts & sizes. Mine covers the speedo face exactly. Taped to the cluster lens, it is readable at night by illumination shining through. Hopefully I'll never need it, but if I ever do one piece of scotch tape will have me back on the road.
