The shift computer is the only thing that makes the transmission shift (neglecting the gearshift). If you are having shifting problems look to the shift computer. Before ripping it out do all of the on-car external adjustments and see if that helps. You are correct that driving on a faulty shift computer can do damage to the internals of the transmission so I agree you are not going to "drive" it to health.
