Cap and rotor already had been replaced. Old wires and new wires (factory type) would not have made much difference as the resistance would still be higher than that of the cables provided by John. You may be aware of the fact that a higher output voltage of the coil improves the quality of the spark. A standard 18 kV coil is no match for a 40 kV coil. The original coil worked, but did not provide the spunk as the higher rated coil from John does. In such cases it also matters that you do not want to wait until the thing gives in (like buying a new TV often happens before the old one dies on you). This also goes for the suspension (spring and shocks). If you are not content with their behavior, you consider replacement even if they still work.
