I've run into this recently when buying a car, not a DeLorean. The seller of the car will have to request a title copy from the DMV the car was first titled in. This is usually a long and painful process that will probably take several weeks to complete. Depending on how comfortable you are with the seller, you could finalize the transaction without the title, drafting an agreement that if she cannot produce a title in a set amount of time the deal is void and all funds returned. But, this is a little risky, it is never a good idea to pay for the car and not get the title along with it, as that document shows total ownership. If it were me and I didn't need the car right away, which I'm assuming you don't since it's a DeLorean, I'd just write a deposit check to hold the deal and wait until all of the paperwork is figured out. However, this may all be moot. I know in Vermont the title is meaningless after I believe 15 years. So when I went to register my DeLorean and brought in my huge 1980's title, they just laughed and said to keep it. So you may not even need it since the car is so old. Call your local DMV.
