If it's in reasonably good condition, something would have to damage the assembly to make all or part of it drop in. If something is inside the crankcase that hits it, you already had huge damage. I'm just not sure what would break it. Perhaps this is me in "Dad mode" with 2 young kids at home, but in my house nothing in good shape just breaks via the finger of God. Despite all claims by the kids, some-thing or some-one broke it. The plastic strainer just sits in the bottom of the oil fill pipe right? If that strainer ever breaks it would end up kicking around inside the crankcase right?
