All this hype about rebuilding DeLoreans is kind of funny to me. I've seen tons and tons of references to this "new production" all over the web, and hence all over the world. But really it's not anything new! Ok, maybe it's a little new... The main difference between these "new production" cars and the ones (like Christian Jarzab's) that DMCH re-manufactured is a stainless frame and new fiberglass. I recall on my warehouse tour that James showed us the pontoon molds, and commented that with modern fiberglass technology, a great deal of weight could be removed from the pontoon, relative to the old ones, while making it structurally stronger. That would be a great benefit! I suppose that if Houston begins remaking pontoons, and the Pierce Permaframe is used (which we all would like to have anyway), there is really not much of a need for a "donor" car anymore --and that's what makes all this interesting. No donor means no existing VIN number and the legal stuff begins... But keep in mind, that these are still not "new" DeLoreans. The majority of the parts, while unused, are still 25 years old, and a handful of the rare parts will still have to come from some NOS supply or donor cars. Still, this would be an awesome car, with lots of new technology upgrades, and as close to a new DeLorean as you will ever get. The bottom line is this: it will be cool when Houston makes these cars, even though I would bet 24 in one year would be a bit ambitious. They would be hand built, so it's not like the production line is starting back up again. But the reason this is getting so much press is simply because James Espey is good at his job: he knows how to speak to reporters in sound bites that get picked up and spread like wildfire. It's great free publicity for the company, and it's great free publicity for us. It's a great time to be a DeLorean owner...
