The thing that killed both the Bricklin and the Delorean was a severe overestimation of how many cars they could make in the first year. Both estimated ten times the number of cars rolling off the assembly lines (and corresponding sales). Since they only made 1/10th the number of cars they estimated, the overhead (fixed cost) had to be spread over way less product, bankrupting the company. I think the design of the Bricklin was very good, but all its safety designs were somewhat negated by airbags. I also think gull-wing doors are better than regular doors, needing only 12 inches of clearance to open fully. I wonder if someone could re-start the Delorean product line with lessons learned: 1) use Toyota engines like the Lotus Elise; 2) use regular steel/paint exterior (both the acrylic shell of the Bricklin and the SS on the Delorean caused enormous production problems); 3) build in an area (NOT Ireland and NOT Canada) that has experience with car building, 4) whatever the estimates are for production, cut by 4/5 to allow for first-run errors, corrections and problems.
