When closing, the open end of the "U" must be visible. If not the will not close properly nor latch the pin. One end of the door could latch and the other not causing the door to stay closed but be twisted a bit. If the open end is not exposed, use a good sized screwdriver to leverage it open. It should pop open easily. Note that this can be a bit messy due to latch grease if present. This is not necessarily a problem exclusive to the DeLorean.
