My bet would be that the otterstat (the switch that turns on the fans, located in the water pipe to the left of the engine just above the cat) was bad or disconeected and the fans never came on. At any rate, its probably bad now since overheating the switch seems to kill it. The engine is probably OK. Refill, bleed, pressure check. Jump the otterstat to make sure the fans actually work (other stuff can kill them too - do you have the blue fan module in there by any chance?). Let us know what you find after that....
