Although there are a slew of Patents by John DeLorean (it is fascinating seeing just what he came up with), there are 2 patents the specifically relate to the styling of the DMC-12, and both of those are held by Giugiaro (he is listed as the "inventor"). Patent # D257,834 was filed in 1978, active starting in 1981 and is for the styling of the Prototype. The length of the patent is for 14 years, so looks to now be expired. Patent # D283,882 was filed in 1981, active starting in1986 and is for the styling of the production car with an assignee of DeLorean Motor Company, also for 14 years.
