I'm curious about the failure mode on the 5-speed. What broke? If the mainshaft nut backed off and drilled a hole in the back cover, that's a pretty common failure that isn't based on driving style (just sloppy assembly at the factory). I've seen several of those now, and a couple more that were getting close but had not come completely unscrewed. The nice thing is that it's a pretty easy fix and you often can do it without even taking the transmission out of the car. It's pretty hard to break a stock trans with a stock engine, although driving it with the stock clutch line in place can beat up the sliding gears pretty good.
