James, Take a good look at the part in question. It is not designed to collapse where the X's cross, it is designed to collapse between the crosses. The fact that it is broken where it is indicates a design flaw. It should never break period. How would you like to have those ends jammed into your leg, or worse, in the event of an accident. I would have it welded and have all the other points where the crosses are formed strengthened at the same time. There's a distinct difference between repairing someone's alternator and repairing a part of the car designed and built to perform in a certain manner in an accident. And while the skydiver may not complain about their parachute opening, I am sure that one of their heirs might, in the form of an attorney knocking on your door. At the end of the day, I have to wonder why someone would cheap out on a safety related part?
