Kevin, Your hard steering sounds similar to a problem I experienced a few years ago. It WAS the U-joint in the steering. I removed the joint and soaked the joint in 90 weight gear oil, heated near the boiling point for a period of about 8 hours. This seemed to force the lube into the joint and the problem has never returned. <<<<This is a potential safety hazard (i.e. "BOOM"). Be careful..... Another possible problem could be a break in the collapsable part of the column. This is visible under the dash.
