Thank you John, That seems to have been one of the problems. I also ran a dedicated hot wire. Seems to be working now. That'll teach me to let an installer put a new radio/cd player in. If you look in the 'Files' section, I have created a folder called 'Electrical' which has a photo of the area. The image is taken of the radio mounting bracket, the black wires all terminate at a bolt arrangement on the right hand side. The car in the picture is at DMCH, all of the internal wiring loom is exposed, a very useful reference...
