I am truly sorry for your loss. 

I'm not trying to splitt hairs or anything. But an Oct. 81 vin Is considered an 81 model 
year.

My vin is 5180 (Oct 81.) The last81 model year VIN was 7199.  Also 82 models came with 
no line hood and the DELOREAN emblem.

Althought ,I have heard of a rare occasion where a car was pulled from the line for what 
ever reason and delayed the production delivery and being givin' a current model year 
title.
