I opened a trunk with a broken cable at the tech session in NJ about 4  years 
ago when it was deemed hopeless.
 
All I used was a piece of thin metal rod ( a bit heavier than a coat  hanger.
Bent it like an L
Slid it under the hood and pulled back until it hit the latch  mechanism
Then pull.
 
Took a few tries and a few small bends to hit what was needed but it tends  
to jam pretty well in the latch mechanism good pull and it opens.
 
I have opened about 4 or 5 cars this way.  Trick is to have a stiff  enough 
rod without being too big.
