Marc,

You're right that the fuse should be as close to the battery  as possible to 
protect as much of the circuit as possible.  I simply  put it just before the 
switch itself because that was easier and it will protect  the switch itself 
which of course is the whole idea.
 
I'll try to figure a way to trace it back and let you  know.  I bet there is 
someone out there that has a harness out of the car  that could figure it out 
easier....

Where is the best physical location to do  this??  The
fuse needs to be close to the battery, but where does
it  split off to that NU wire?
