The simplest thing to do would be to just put the Motorola back and see if all the symptoms go away. It isn't that big a deal and it will at least let you drive the car till you can talk to John. Anyway, if you have to send the alternator back at least you will still be able to drive the car! From the symptoms you describe it *could* be the alternator or it can also be bad/dirty connections. When replacing the Motorola make sure all the electrical connections are clean, shinny, and tight. If the battery is over 5 years old have it tested or just replaced.
