I may be doing the same to my car some day, just to really clean things up, replace the exhaust, etc. Out of curiosity, does the engine come out the top or the bottom? With the transmission still attached it had to have come out the bottom, but if that were removed beforehand, can the engine be pulled out the top? What did you use to lift the back of the car high enough to get the engine out from underneath it? The last time I replaced an engine in a car it was a Fiero; the engine came out the bottom. It was not fun. Getting the car high enough to move the engine out from underneath it was even less fun.
